How can we know that God exists? That is a question that will haunt the halls of philosophy and modern science until the return of our Precious Savior. The no nonsence answer to this question is: apart from simple faith, there is no answer or evidence that will prove the existance of God to the point that argument cannot be made against it. Now, before you turn off the computer and count me out as a card carrying athiest, let me explain.
God does not need validation
First of all, we need to understand some truths about God. God is holy and we are not. That is the first truth we must embrace. The second truth is that God doesn’t need the validation of human beings to prove his existance. He existed before we were created and will continue after the earth is destroyed. Whether or not humans were ever created would not have any impact on God’s existance. So as far as God is concerned, the greatest minds in atheism can argue his existance until they are blue in the face and it will not change one thing in regards to His being.
The bible does not argue the existance of God
One thing we Christians need to grasp as well, is that it’s pointless for us to take on the heresy of atheism with the bible. We will lose every time. “Well now isn’t the bible the all powerful word of God, you ask?” It most certainly is, however, in view of what we learned about God’s holiness in the last paragraph, he did not see the the need to prove his existance by the validation of man. Therefore, there is not one verse in the bible that seeks to prove that God exists. “O little man,” he does not need you to tell him he is. So the next time an atheist strikes up a conversation with you, dont throw your pearls before swine. It is pointless. So what do we have available to prove God’s existance to these blinded souls? The answer is, conscience and creation.
God is revealed in creation
The 1st chapter of romans gives us the tools we need to prove His existence. The first thing it tells us is that God is revealed in creation. Paul tells us in Romans 1:18 that there really isn’t a such thing as true atheism. That those who claim to be atheists are just suppressing the truth in their unrighteousness. He goes on in verses 19 and 20 to tell us that God has revealed himself in the things he has made, and that alone leaves man without an excuse.
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: God is revealed in conscience
Let’s take a look at verse 28:
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
Here God lets us know that he has revealed himself in the conscience of man. It is again, man who has decided to block out the existence of God. God then let man have what he wished for as punishment for trying to forget him. The fact of the matter is there is truly no such thing as an atheist. There are only those who choose to block God out of their minds because they do not want to be accountable to any higher power.
The Natural Order
There is however, one question that all atheist’s fear. One question that shadows over them like a ring wraith. That question deals with the natural order of the universe. If everything came into existence by one big bang, how can you explain the natural order of the things in the universe? How can we explain gravity, the order of the seasons, how we continue to reproduce after our own kind again and again, how that you woke up this morning and the sun came up just like yesterday? The answer is, you can’t and you won’t. There has never been an even remotely satisfying answer to this question because apart from an intelligent creator, there can be no natural order. This question will continue to haunt the blinded atheist until either the Lord comes back and they stand before him in judgment, or we get through to their hearts and change their lives with the Gospel.
That leads us back to our duty as Christian disciples. We are to continue to bring to light these truths by living the Gospel and confronting their worldview head on with ours. Especially if you have friends and family that are of this sort. What will you say to your friends or family members as they stand before God in judgment and look over to you and ask,“if you knew this truth all along, why didn’t you care enough about us to explain it to us”? Do you want to be on the receiving end of this question? I think not. Therefore, have the courage now to answer the questions they have in this life, so that you aren’t forced to answer the question they will have for you in the next one.
