imageWe humans are flawed individuals. We were created as wonderful, loving, thinking, feeling people in the image of God. But through the fall, satan has used our most wonderful gifts against us. The once holy, loving, selfless, and considerate individual, has now become shallow, self-righteous, materialistic and selfish. We use to follow a path because it led us closer to God, but now we follow a path¬†because everyone else is going the same way and we don’t want to feel left out. Jesus tells us in Matthew chapter 7 that this will lead us to destruction.

He said…

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Matthew 7:13-14

You see, there are two paths to heaven. One is wide, with a large gate and a big sign above it that is lit up with flashy lights. The other is a very narrow, and probably overgrown cattle trail. It has an old wooden sign above it that is about to fall down and the old rickety gate has seen its better days. Both signs say the same thing: “TURN HERE FOR HEAVEN” but both gates will not lead¬†you there. Our job is to decide which path to take. In today’s culture we we have been taught to compare ourselves to those around us. If the Christian next to you looks and acts like you, you must be doing pretty well. That is a slick tongue lie of the devil and the reason why Jesus said only a few will find the right path.

It is so hard to get through our thick skulls that we are measured by God’s standards not man’s. If we were measured by the standards of men there would have been no reason for Christ to die in our place. But we are flawed and wicked by nature. We will never meet God’s perfect standard for right living. Do not think for a second that you are right with God based on how you look in relation to other people. You will most likely find yourself in the depart from me line rather than the enter in line. The only way we can accurately measure what right really looks like is through the Word of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Jesus said:
Not everyone who says to me Lord Lord will enter the kingdom of Heaven, but those who do the will of the Father.

Right does not look like the popular crowd. It doesn’t follow social norms. It is not sensitive to what others think about it. Right is totally separated from the status quo. So how do I enter in at the narrow gate you ask? Let’s take a look at that.

Remember Jesus said broad is the path that leads to destruction. That gate has enough room for you and all your self righteous baggage to enter through. However, to enter in the narrow gate, you have to go in alone and naked. That’s right! You can’t take anything with you. When Jesus calls us to be his disciple he calls us to leave everything for him, everything. You money, family, friends, associations, personal belongings, pride, greed etc,.. You must be willing to lose everything to gain Christ. Those who do are promised eternal life.

What path are you on? Are you sold out for Jesus or sold out to the world? Don’t base your eternal destiny on how you add up to other people. Base your life on God’s word and give it all to him regardless of what other people think. Look unto Jesus for your example on how to live and rest in his love and security forever.

Very good sermon Danny. I am so thankful that I rely on the Word of our Lord. My life was almost destroyed by “Man’s” doctrines and rules. My Bible has become my best friend, I have learned so much this past year. Thanks for the words of of truth.
