There are so many people today who just don’t know how to pray properly. If you are one of these believers, fear not. We’re about to start a new series on the basics of prayer that will have you praying like a pro in no time. The first thing we need to get down is what prayer really is. Once we have that under our belt we can continue to the basics of the praying life. So lets get started.
Prayer is nothing more than simply talking with God. God wants to have a relationship with all his children. In order to do that we must get to know him. How do we do that? Well, one way we get to know a lot about him is by reading our bible. The bible reveals everything we can know about the person of God and more than we will ever be able to learn in our lifetime. However, just knowing a lot about God will not yield a personal relationship with him. Not only are we to learn what we can about him, we must get to know him personally as well. The only way to do that is to establish that relationship in prayer. Once we start to pray on a regular basis we’ll get to know him better and be able to hear when he is speaking to us. This is absolutely critical to living a victorious Christian life.
So what does talking to God look like? If I read my Old Testament it seems kinda scary. This is true. But thanks to the work that our savior Jesus Christ did on the Cross, it’s no longer a scary thing at all. Now that Jesus has rent the veil of the Holy of Holies, we have access directly to the Father anytime, anyplace. The work that he did on the Cross is another study all together so I won’t get into that today. I will just say that now that his work is finished we can talk to God just like we talk to our father on earth.
The bible tells us in Gal 4:6 that if we are saved, God has put the Spirit of Christ within us crying abba Father. What does this mean? Our spirit longs for and calls out to God just as if he were our daddy. It’s the same type of relationship. We should be as comfortable coming before God as we are talking to our Dad.
So what do we talk to God about? We talk to him about everything. God loves you and he’s interested in every aspect of your life. There is nothing you can talk to your dad about that you can’t talk to God about. As a matter of fact, he knows every thing you do. Every action and every mistake, every sin, and every thought you think. In that respect, we should be able to talk to our Heavenly Father about more than we can even talk to our earthly dads about.
Another misconception about prayer is that it has to be big words that are rehearsed and that we have to sound important and reverent when we come before him. This is a tradition of men that bears no biblical truth and it’s simply not true. As a matter of fact, he dislikes this type of fake attitude in prayer more than anything. Jesus tells us in the Gospels that when we pray, not to use vain repetition like the heathen do for they think they will be heard for their much speaking. God doesn’t like this kind of communication. You don’t have to rehearse your speech, or tell him over and over again for him to hear you. The practice of prayer is simply opening your heart and life to God in conversation which will allow you to get to know him personally and for him to speak to your life and meet your needs.
So in conclusion, prayer is having a conversation with your Heavenly Father about anything and everything going on in your life, and then it’s sitting in silence and just listening for him to speak to your spirit and refresh your soul as you grow in your relationship with him. It’s not complicated. It’s not hard. It is a simple conversation between a son and his Father. So pray on!
