What is Faith?

susancorpuz90Faith is a mystery. Faith is elusive. Faith is difficult to understand. Yet Faith is the absolute crux of the Christian Faith. You simply cannot be a Christian without it. Why then, is it so impossible to give an accurate and definitive definition for it in human words? Even the bible writers could not pin a definition that is absolute. The bible tells us:

Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Heb. 11:1

Guess what? That is the biblical definition of faith and if God inspired that definition then there is simply no better English definition for it, period. Anyone who thinks they have a better definition is saying they can do it better than God, not happening. But that doesn’t explain it very well. We are still where we started at. I know, I feel the same way. ¬†The problem is that the faith the Christian requires and the faith that the world requires for living are not even close in comparison. Faith as defined by society is trust, belief, or hope. Those are qualifiers for anyone to trust in well,.. anything. The Faith that the Christian life requires is totally different. It is supernatural. It is celestial. It is holy. I truly believe only heavenly language can give an accurate definition in words. the good news is that while we can’t define it in words, we can understand it.

In order for us to truly understand faith in our hearts, we need the Holy Spirit. We also need to be mature Christians. The more we grow in Christ, the more we understand faith in the heart. But we can understand it intellectually if we read the entire 11th chapter of Hebrews. Because faith is such a supernatural attribute, it is best explained through examples rather than definition. God carefully chose which giants of faith to include in this chapter. The examples presented represent every aspect of faith perfectly as only God can and gives us quite a visual representation of its awesome power. These examples explain in sufficient detail the aspects of faith, our responsibility with the faith, and the awesome power it contains. Carefully study through hebrews chapter 11 next time you open your bible and watch faith come alive before your eyes.
